APPLES

The apple is a tree of the genus Malus, belonging to the family Rosaceae, and it is one of the most widely cultivated trees. Dessert apples are Malus domestica species or a hybrid.
The species originated in Western Asia, where there can still be found its wild ancestors. Apples were among the first trees that were cultivated by the people and the diversity of varieties goes up to 7500 types. Each variety is characterized by different sizes, flowering period and characteristics of the fruit.
The annual production of apples globally exceed 55 million tons, which corresponds to a count of about 10 billion apples. Among the major apple producers are China, the U.S., Iran, Turkey, Russia, Italy and India.
